Residential burning permits may be obtained anytime at
the fire station for no cost. There is a small fee for commercial
customers and these permits may be obtained Monday through Friday

The Fire Department provides a babysitting
workshop in conjunction with the Merriam
Parks & Recreation Department. This is an eight hour class
and a fee is assessed for the text and class materials. The course
includes: child development, how to get a babysitting job, handling
infants, CPR, first aid, accident prevention and record keeping.
CPR training is available for a minimal
fee to cover the educational materials only. To schedule a training

The Fire Department provides
fire extinguisher training to businesses and residents. Topics include
fire classification, types of fire extinguishers, selection of the
correct extinguisher, and operation of the extinguisher.
The Fire Department is responsible
for planning and responding to flash flooding. A copy of the plan
is available at the fire station. If you would like to be included
on the call list for assistance in preparing for high water, or
if you need assistance with water removal, contact the Fire Department

A Juvenile Firesetter
Prevention Program is provided to the residents of Merriam at no
cost. This program is aimed at identifying and educating the juvenile
firesetter.
The Fire Department will conduct
a fire safety survey of any Merriam resident's home at no cost.

The Johnson County Environmental
Department assists residents in the disposal of household hazardous
waste. For more information, contact the Johnson County Environmental

The Merriam Fire Department initiated
a new public awareness program targeting neighborhood homes associations
and Merriam residential communities. The purpose of the program
is to provide residents an opportunity to observe department field
training operations and equipment, and to promote fire safety and
first-aid awareness. The program will continue through October 15th.

All major structures and businesses
have complete information pre-plans on file with the Fire Department.
This information is available to firefighters via laptop computers
located in the fire trucks before they arrive at the scene. Information
includes location of special equipment and records, number of employees
in building, hazardous materials, and special construction features,
and other applicable information that will assist the Fire Department
in an efficient and effective operation to save property.
There are many films and videos regarding
fire prevention, first aid practices, cardiopulmonary resuscitation,
etc. Homes associations, PTAs and businesses are welcome to view
these films at their meetings. Handout materials are also available

The Fire Department, in conjunction with
the Merriam Community Association and American Red Cross, will offer
to install a free smoke detector to any Merriam resident that does
not already have one.
The Merriam Fire Department has a
long history with its professional volunteer firefighter program.
Volunteers are trained to provide the same service as a paid firefighter
and often choose a paid career in fire services.
