PET REGISTRATION

Last year the Merriam Police Department impounded 170 stray animals. Of those, 74 were cats and 96 were dogs. Three of the impounded cats were reclaimed, and 32 of the impounded dogs were claimed by owners. Remember to have your pets licensed. Not only is it required by law, it also helps the Police Department return your lost pets to you.

All dogs and cats six months or older must be licensed and proof of rabies vaccination is required. Effective January 1, 2011, you are allowed to have two dogs and three cats per address. A third dog and/or a fourth cat may be allowed with a special pet permit. To download a copy of the pet registration form, go to http://merriam.org/PDFs/2011-Pet-Registration.pdf. For additional information about pet licensing, go to http://merriam.org/pet/index.htm.

Residents are not allowed to have more than two dogs or five cats. Anyone who desires to keep more than two dogs or five cats must complete a special application (reviewed by the Chief of Police). For additional information call (913) 322-5500.
