Last year the Merriam Police Department impounded 170 stray animals. Of those, 74 were cats and 96 were dogs. Three of the impounded cats were reclaimed, and 32 of the impounded dogs were claimed by owners. Remember to have your pets licensed. Not only is it required by law, it also helps the Police Department return your lost pets to you.
All dogs and cats six months or older must be licensed. The license fee is $30; if the animal is spade or neutered, the fee is $5. Licenses are valid for one year and run concurrent with the dates of your rabies vaccination. License applications are available by clicking here and must be filled out and returned along with proper licensing fee and a copy of the current rabies vaccination receipt from your veterinarian's office.
Residents are not allowed to have more than two dogs or five cats. Anyone who desires to keep more than two dogs or five cats must complete a special application (reviewed by the Chief of Police). For additional information call (913) 322-5500.
