What is a Citizen Police Academy?
The role of the police has always been interesting to the average citizen. The television media has capitalized upon this curiosity with shows such as "Cops", "America's Most Wanted", and "Stories of the Highway Patrol".
Each week, real police action is broadcast into the living rooms of millions of Americans. The hope is that by allowing citizens a firsthand look at what rules, regulations, and policies police follow, accurate information will be learned and some of the misunderstandings may be alleviated.
The Citizen Police Academy program is intended to open the lines of communications between the community and police department. In the past, citizens have simply seen a uniform, now they have an opportunity to understanding about the person behind the badge.
The Citizen Police Academy will allow citizens and police officers to meet each other face to face in a neutral, friendly setting where each becomes a person to the other. The objective of the academy is not to train an individual to be a "reserve police officer", but to produce informed citizens.
