The Merriam Police Department has been involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for twenty-three years. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a series of runs that end in Wichita for the start of the Special Olympic Summer games. This tradition started in Wichita, Kansas and is now done in all 50 states, the providence's of Canada, Europe, Africa, China, and Japan.
The Merriam Police Department also participates in events like the Polar Bear Plunge, Cops on Top of Krispy Kreme, and the Torch Run itself throughout the year to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics.
Officers of the Merriam Police Department have raised $111,589 over the last 5 years to further the cause of Special Olympics. In 2006, Merriam Police Officers were responsible for raising $31,711 of the $48,666 raised in Johnson and Wyandotte County.
