Electronics Recycling Event

What: Electronics Recycling Day (co-sponsored by the City of Merriam)

When: Saturday, April 5 from 9AM to 2PM

Where: Shawnee Mission North High School parking lot (7401 Johnson Drive)

Electronic Recycling

Why: Currently, only a small percentage of electronic devices are recycled.  Electronic devices can contain significant amounts of hazardous or toxic substances. Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) found in most computer monitors contain significant amounts of lead, while other equipment may contain mercury, cadmium, chromium and other heavy metals. When electronic devices are disposed of, these pollutants may pose environmental risks.

Collected equipment will be inspected, recondition, and reused whenever possible. Obsolete or non-working equipment will be disassembled and the components recycled.

How: Bring your unwanted electronics to the collection event.  Volunteers will unload your vehicle for you.  There will be no charge for recycling items, such as computer CPUs, keyboards, mice, VCRs, stereos, scanners, and personal printers.

Charges of $10 to $25 will apply to recycle computer monitors, televisions and large printers.  For 10 or more computers, contact Surplus Exchange at 816-472-0444 to schedule a pickup at your location.

Shredding Event

Identity theft and security issues have many residents concerned about appropriate disposal of sensitive financial and personal documents. Shredding materials at home or in a small office can range from a nuisance to an impossible task.

Protect yourself. Gather your outdated records and take them to a shredding event to be (co-sponsored by the City of Merriam) held in conjunction with the electronics recycling event on Saturday, April 5th in the parking lot of Shawnee Mission North High School, 7401 Johnson Drive from 9AM to 2PM.

ProShred Security will destroy your records on-site and the material will be recycled.  Suggested donation for this service is $5 for a standard storage box and $10 for larger quantities.

Help Keep City Storm Drains Clean

As spring time nears, the City of Merriam wants to take this opportunity to remind you and ask for your assistance in keeping curbs, gutters, and storm drains free of debris.

City crews make efforts to keep waterways free of debris and ask that citizens take caution when placing any sorts of lawn debris or other items that could find their way into such areas.  Blockage of such areas can not only cause flooding, but also property damage.
