Don't miss the Turkey Creek Car and Motorcycle Show

The City of Merriam will host its 8th Annual Turkey Creek Car and Motorcycle Show this Saturday, September 13th, at the Merriam Marketplace, 5740 Merriam Drive, from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.

Activities include music by “The Candy Man,” door prizes, concessions, and demonstrations. There will be an exhibition of “non-motorized” vehicles such as customized bicycles and model cars. Awards will be presented at 3:00 PM, including a V-8 Chevrolet crate engine will be given away as the grand prize to one lucky exhibitor.

NEW FOR 2008 - Following the car show, Downtown Merriam Businesses will be sponsoring a "Merriam Summertime Blues/Cruise" from 7:00-10:30 PM at the Merriam Marketplace. Weather permitting, this event will feature great food and live music by the band "51% Blues".

Spectator parking will be limited in the downtown Merriam area. Parking is suggested at the following locations: Irene B. French Community Center, 5701 Merriam Drive, Merriam Christian Church, 9401 Johnson Drive, or IBT Corporation, 9400 W. 55th Street. A free shuttle bus will be provided to the car show and farmers’ market from 9:45 – 4:15 from IBT parking lot only. There is no charge for spectators to visit the events.

In the event of inclement weather, the Parks & Recreation Department will post notice of cancellation on their website. You can also call the cancellation line at (913) 322-5591.

The City of Merriam is teaming up with the Johnson County North Central Multi-Service Center, and sponsoring a "Feed the Need" food and fund drive throughout the month of September. Donations received through the drive will help feed those in need throughout our community.

Your contribution means much needed help, and hope, will be available to those in need.

Most Needed Food Items: Canned Vegetables Canned Fruit Boxed Meals (Hamburger Helper, Pasta Roni) Canned Meats/Tuna Peanut Butter & Jelly Canned Soup Hot & Cold Cereal	Most Needed Household Supplies & Personal Care Items: Soap Deodorant Shampoo Toilet Paper

Financial Contributions: For every $1 donated, Harvesters can provide five meals!	Product donations should be boxed, bagged or canned. To avoid breakage, do not donate products in glass containers.

Events: September 15 (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM) - "Feed the Need Pizza Feed" at Merriam City Hall - $5 buys you Pizza Hut pizza, pasta, breadsticks and drinks (while supplies last) September 15-17 (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) - Silent Auction in the Community Room at Merriam City Hall September 15-18 (8:00 AM- 4:30 PM) - Bake Sale at Merriam City Hall & Irene B. French Community Center

Identity theft and security issues have many residents concerned about appropriate disposal of sensitive financial and personal documents. Shredding materials at home or in a small office can range from a nuisance to an impossible task.

Protect yourself. Gather your outdated records and take them to a shredding event to be (co-sponsored by the City of Merriam) on Friday, October 10th in the parking lot of Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center, 6200 Martway in Mission, KS from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.

The first file size box of material to be shredded will be free. Each additional box will cost $5 each. All paper shredding at this event will be recycled!

On Saturday, October 11th, the City of Merriam will partner with other NE Johnson County cities to sponsor the Second Annual Home Ideas and Renovation Expo at Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The event includes free workshops and a resource expo with booths on topics such as building code requirements, city services, security, home investments, and more.

The City of Merriam will conduct its annual fall clean-up campaign during the week of October 13 through 17, 2008. Large items such as furniture, appliances, lumber and other building material, and miscellaneous large items are to be put curbside on the scheduled pickup day.

These items will NOT be picked up:
-	Routine trash (goes to local trash service)
-	Concrete, asphalt, cinder blocks, or rocks
-	Roofing materials, shingles, tar or other chemical sealants
-	Tree branches, brush, firewood, leaves (however, lumber will be accepted if nails and sharp objects are removed)
-	Paint cans, chemicals, tires, motor oil, brake fluid, gas/gas tanks, diesel fuel, pesticides, etc.

A one-time pickup in scheduled areas will occur as outlined below. Residents must have their items curbside before 7:00 AM the day of their pickup. Residents should not load items into truck beds, trailers or inside containers they wish to keep.

Mon, October 13 -	North of 75th St. and south of 67th; East of Switzer and west of Antioch.
Tues, October 14 -	North of 67th and south of Johnson Dr.; East of Switzer and west of Antioch.
Wed, October 15 -	North of 67th and south of 54th Terr.; East of Antioch and west of Lowell
Thurs, October 16 -	North of Johnson Dr. and south of 53rd; West of Antioch and east of Switzer.
Fri, October 17 -	North of 53rd and south of 47th; West of Antioch and east of Switzer.

Senior citizen and residents with disabilities, can call the public works department at 322-5570 to be placed on a list of citizens needing assistance in removal of large items from the home or yard.
