Babysitting Workshops
The Fire Department provides a babysitting workshop in conjunction with the Merriam Parks & Recreation Department. This is an eight hour class and a fee is assessed for the text and class materials. The course includes: child development, how to get a babysitting job, handling infants, CPR, first aid, accident prevention, and record keeping.

Burning Permits
Residential burning permits may be obtained anytime at the fire station for no cost. There is a small fee for commercial customers and these permits may be obtained Monday through Friday during regular business hours. For more information on burn permissions, call 913.322.5530.

Fire Extinguisher Training
The Fire Department provides fire extinguisher training to businesses and residents. Topics include fire classification, types of fire extinguishers, selection of the correct extinguisher, and operation of the extinguisher.

Flash Flood Operations
The Fire Department is responsible for planning and responding to flash flooding. A copy of the plan is available at the fire station. If you would like to be included on the call list for assistance in preparing for high water, or if you need assistance with water removal, contact the Fire Department at 913.322.5530.

Home Safety Evaluation
The Fire Department will conduct a fire safety survey of any Merriam resident's home at no cost. Call 913.322.5530 to schedule your home safety evaluation.

Household Hazardous Waste
The Johnson County Environmental Department assists residents in the disposal of household hazardous waste. For more information, contact the Johnson County Environmental Offices at 913.492.0402.
