Fire Chief's Message
Our Fire Department
The Merriam Fire Department comes from a long tradition of “Serving the People”. We have been a fire department since 1947. At that time, it was completely made up of volunteer firefighters. These individuals were area business men in the community, who wanted to protect their property and provide first aid to those in need. It was these same individuals who took the necessary steps to turn a township into a City.

Since those humble beginnings, Merriam has grown to a population of 11,008 in a city that is 4.5 square miles in size. City-wide, it employs 128 full and part-time employees, of which 23 are firefighters. The fire department still has 4 volunteers, who proudly serve the community. Volunteer Division Chief George Mallory has been serving Merriam for 51 years and his dedication and commitment is an inspiration to us all.

Our Rating
The Insurance Services Office (ISO) rates fire departments across the U.S. from a class 1 to a class 10, with one being the best. There are no class 1 fire departments in Kansas and there are only four class 2 fire departments. We are pleased to say that we have been given a classification rating of 2. We responded to approximately of 1,750 calls with an average response time of 4-3/4 minutes. We are fortunate to have a reciprocal automatic mutual aid agreement with our surrounding cities. This agreement provides an immediate response of manpower and equipment on specific calls. Thus, we are able to provide an efficient utilization of everyone’s limited resources during an emergency.

We received a new pumper built by Pierce Manufacturing in September 2011. I invite you to come by the station and check it out.
