Juvenile Firesetter Prevention Program
A Juvenile Firesetter Prevention Program is provided to the residents of Merriam at no cost. This program is aimed at identifying and educating the juvenile firesetter.

Neighborhood Awareness Program
The Merriam Fire Department initiated a new public awareness program targeting neighborhood homes associations and Merriam residential communities. The purpose of the program is to provide residents an opportunity to observe department field training operations and equipment, and to promote fire safety and first-aid awareness. The program will continue through October 15th. To schedule a presentation for your neighborhood, contact email Doug Crockett or contact him by phone at 913.322.5539.

Pre-Planning Information
All major structures and businesses have complete information pre-plans on file with the Fire Department. This information is available to firefighters via laptop computers located in the fire trucks before they arrive at the scene. Information includes location of special equipment and records, number of employees in building, hazardous materials, special construction features, and other applicable information that will assist the Fire Department in an efficient and effective operation to save property.

Resource Material
There are many films and videos regarding fire prevention, first aid practices, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, etc. Homes associations, PTAs, and businesses are welcome to view these films at their meetings. Handout materials are also available at no cost. For more information, contact the Fire Department at 913.322.5530.

Smoke Detectors
The Fire Department, in conjunction with the Merriam Community Association and American Red Cross, will offer to install a free smoke detector to any Merriam resident that does not already have one.

Volunteer Firefighters
The Merriam Fire Department has a long history with its professional volunteer firefighter program. Volunteers are trained to provide the same service as a paid firefighter and often choose a paid career in fire services.
