Merriam to host Flags 4 Freedom patriotic flag display
Flags 4 Freedom
MERRIAM, KANSAS (June 27, 2012) – Merriam, Kansas will once again host the 7th Annual “Flags 4 Freedom” event from Saturday, June 30 – Friday, July 6, 2012.  Downtown Merriam and surrounding areas will be beautifully transformed into a sea of red, white and blue as Flags 4 Freedom organizers place over 1,800 United States flags at the Merriam Marketplace, Irene B. French Community Center and along Merriam and Johnson Drive.

In 2006, the first-ever flag field in the State of Kansas was hosted in Merriam with thousands of visitors viewing the flags throughout the three-day event.  Since that small beginning, the event has been renamed “Flags 4 Freedom,” and in 2010, became a community fundraising project of the Merriam Parks, Recreation and Community Center Foundation.  Today, Flags 4 Freedom has become a recognized event in Merriam with numerous visitors attending the flag field and scheduled activities throughout the week.

This event is well-suited to families, military personnel, veterans, individuals, businesses and community citizens.  Everyone is invited to stop by during the week of July 4th to view an astonishing display of patriotism and community pride or join the opening ceremony by the Merriam Fire Department Honor Guard on Saturday, June 30 at 9:30 a.m.   Visitors won’t want to miss the FREE band concert on Wednesday, July 4th at 12:30 p.m. by the 35th Infantry Division Kansas Army National Guard Band.  Bring a lawn chair, this event is FREE and all are invited to attend (concessions are available for sale on site).  Flags (made in Kansas City by the Allied Flag Company) may be dedicated to honor military past or present, friends, and loved ones by sponsoring a dedication ribbon for $15 each.
