Building Permits :
Some home repairs and alterations may require that you obtain a building permit, including fence and roof installation, and driveway replacements. Burn Permits:
Residential burning permits may be obtained at no costs; a small fee is charged for commercial customers. Burning permits may be obtained Monday through Friday at the Merriam Fire Department, 9000 W. 62nd Terrace. For more information call (913) 322-5530.
Dog & Cat Licenses:
All dogs and cats six months or older must be licensed. The license fee is $30; if the animal is spade or neutered, the fee is $5. Licenses are valid for one year and run concurrent with the dates of your rabies vaccination. License applications are available by clicking here and must be filled out and returned along with proper licensing fee and a copy of the current rabies vaccination receipt from your veterinarian's office. Residents are not allowed to have more than two dogs or five cats. Anyone who desires to keep more than two dogs or five cats must complete a special application (reviewed by the Chief of Police). Garage Sale Permits:
A permit secured from the Administration office at City Hall must be posted on the premises where it can be seen from the street. There is no charge for the permit, but a record is kept so no more than two sales are held at the same location during a 12-month period. Signs to advertise the sale should be confined to private property with the owner's permission. No signs can be placed on utility poles, trees or on any City rights-of-way. Occupational Licenses:
All businesses in Merriam are required by City ordinance to obtain an occupational license before they can open for business. The licenses are valid for one calendar year and must be renewed each year thereafter. Renewals are considered delinquent after March 1st and subject to additional fines. The City maintains a database which lists all pertinent information relating to the business. A copy of these records is made available to the Merriam Police and Fire Departments for emergency purposes. Should any changes occur to relevant company information, please notify City Hall at (913) 322-5500 so records remain accurate.
