Merriam, a city of Second Class, has four wards. Elections are held in odd numbered years. Merriam is served by a Mayor and 8 Council Members, two from each ward. All are elected to 4 year terms. Four Council Members will be elected in 2007. The Mayor and four Council Members will be elected in 2009. Terms of office begin with and include the first regular meeting of the governing body following certification of the election.
