Citizens Police Academy

The Merriam Police Department will soon be accepting online applications for the Citizens Police Academy. Get a behind-the-scene tour of what officers do on a daily basis. The 10-week program starts Wednesday, Aug. 18 and runs through Oct. 20. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m at the Merriam Police Department located at 9010 W. 62nd St. Stay tuned for more information, including the application process.


The Citizens Police Academy started in 2009 as a way to strengthen relationships with the community. Non-Merriam residents are welcome to apply.

Participants will learn about:
  • Home security
  • Search and seizure
  • Court procedure
  • Traffic enforcement and accident investigation
  • Use of force and defensive tactics, including a taser demonstration
  • Domestic violence
  • Firearms training
  • DUI investigation
  • Many other law enforcement topics
Participants will also tour the Merriam police station as well as Johnson County crime lab, dispatch, and jail.
