Learn how to shoot a gun, know more about crime trends in the community, and take a jail tour during the 2018 Merriam Police Citizens Academy. The Merriam Police Department is now accepting applications online from residents wanting to get a behind-the scene tour.
The 10-week program starts Wednesday, April 4 and will run through June 6 at the Merriam Police Department located at 9010 W. 62nd St. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m.
Merriam Police Captain Troy Duvanel said the Citizens Academy started in 2009 as a way to promote understanding through community interaction.
“We do the Citizens Academy so residents can see what we do and become familiar with our officers,” Capt. Duvanel said. “It’s a great way for us to strengthen relationships with the community.”
Residents interested in participating in the Citizens Academy can apply online or fill out an application in person at the police department. Non-Merriam residents are also welcome to apply.
