Annual High School Visual Arts Competition Opening Reception

1st Place 3-D Prelude to Extinction

The Annual High School Visual Arts Competition is one of the largest high school art competitions in the Kansas City metro region allowing student artists to showcase their work in watercolor, pastel, oil, acrylics, drawing, 3D, photography, and digital illustration/painting.  Prizes are awarded to the top three pieces in each category. 

Eligibility to Enter

 All high school students currently attending high school or home schooled in the Kansas City area are eligible to enter the competition.

How to Enter

Instructors should coordinate submission of student's art work.

Each artist may submit three pieces of art work for consideration.

IMAGES

  • Must submit images in JPEG format; no larger than 1MB; one image per piece.
  • Selection will be made from images.  Image should provide accurate representation of work to be considered.  
  • Students may enter more than one category but are limited to three total entries.
  • Image file must be labeled as follows: category code; title of work, student's last name, schools initials

    • Category Codes (PH, 2D, 3D, DIP)

EXCEL SPREADSHEET

  • Information must be submitted on an excel spreadsheet:
    • Student's First Name, Student's Last Name, Student's home address (school address not accepted), City, State, Zip Code, School, Title of Work, Image FIie Name, Size of Work, Instructor and Instructor's Email
    • Each item should be in its own column. 
    • Contact staff to have template emailed

SUMBISSION

  • Images and Excel spreadsheet must be submitted via Dropbox by deadline date.
  • Contact staff for the Dropbox link.

Accepted Categories

Categories of art accepted includes:

  • PH - photography
  • 2D - two-dimensional: watercolor, oil, pencil, pastel, mixed media
  • 3D - three-dimensional: sculpture, silverwork, etc.
  • DIP - digital illustration/painting - created using own digital technology, no auto generated or AI generated works accepted

Selection Process

An anonymous professional artist will determine which pieces will qualify for the show. Notification of acceptance will be posted on the website.  All instructors will be notified via email on the accepted works for the show and acceptance letters will be sent to all student's home addresses.  The judge will consider color/values, technique, form and presentation as part of the criteria in judging the works. 

Presentation

  • All paintings and photography should be matted or framed and may not exceed 40 inches in width or height.
  • The name of the student, name of the artwork and the school the student is from must be on the back of all artwork.
  • All works must have a secure hanger firmly attached tot the back in order to be properly displayed on the hanging system.

Prizes

Following will be awarded in each of the four categories

First Place    $150 gift card
Second Place      $100 gift card
Third Place $50 gift card

 

Timeline

October 23, 2023 is the submission deadline

November 1, 2023 students will be notified of acceptance   

December 7, 2023  Reception from 7 - 8:30 p.m.; Awards Ceremony at 8 p.m.
