The Merriam Parks and Recreation Department has something for everyone. Explore this section and enroll in one of our adult programs or classes. All classes are held at the Merriam Community Center, 6040 Slater Street, unless noted otherwise.  

Fitness Classes

Building Strength 

This class is for all levels of participants and will develop muscular strength in the upper and lower body and in the core using a variety of methods, from free weights to stability balls and body weight exercises. Flexibility and range of motion will also be stressed. All activities will be low to no impact! Instructor: Potts

Beginner Line Dance Lessons

Mix Fit

Avoid falling into a workout rut with the same thing every day. This class is anything but routine! The class focuses on cardio and strength with max calorie burn using a variety of workout styles, including H.I.I.T, EMOM, AMRAP, and more. WERQ

WERQ (pronounced “work”) is the wildly addictive dance fitness class based on the hottest hip-hop music. Beyond being easy to follow for all levels, WERQ is an effective cardio class that feels more like a dance club experience. Instructor: Jordan

Zumba®

Zumba® GOLD

Zumba Gold is a modified Zumba class for active, older adults that recreates the original Zumba moves in a joint-friendly, lower-intensity manner. The class introduces easy-to-follow choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and coordination. Instructor: Tobin

Aikido Yoshinkan- Traditional Martial Arts

The Yoshinkan style of aikido is a dynamic system of throwing, joint-locking, striking, and pinning techniques. At its core, aikido is a self-defense martial art used by many law enforcement agencies across the world as an effective way to safely neutralize aggression. Stage Combat

The Ki Society

You’re invited to have a new experience learning the five disciplines of the Ki Society (ki-breathing, ki-meditation, aikido, kiatsu, and bell meditation). These practices are fundamental to an awareness of our natural state of being. Pickleball

Part tennis, part badminton, part pingpong, all fun! This easy-to-learn, eye-hand coordination game is growing rapidly in popularity.  With all equipment provided, the only thing you need is a partner and a positive attitude! This class combines cardio and strength training intervals using noodles and dumbbells at varying intensities. Increase stamina, strength, flexibility, and joint range of motion. This therapeutic class is designed for those experiencing limited joint movement, pain, or reduced strength from arthritis. Paving Your Path to a Healthy Family

Jessica Persson, a certified health coach from the Dr. Sears Wellness Institute, will guide you in incremental, achievable steps toward improving your family’s wellness, focusing on Dr. Sears’ L.E.A.N.
