The Merriam Parks and Recreation Department has something for everyone. Explore this section and enroll in one of our adult programs or classes. All classes are held at the Merriam Community Center, 6040 Slater Street, unless noted otherwise.

Dance Fitness

Line Dancing for Beginners

Line dancing is a choreographed dance with a repeated step sequence. You’ll learn basic patterns and dances.  If you have always wanted to learn or have not line danced in a long time, this is the class for you.  Line dancing does not require a partner, so bring your friends and be ready to have fun!  Wear shoes that will allow you to turn easily.  No cowboy boots.  Instructor: KCBootdancer

Line Dance Mania

This class is for intermediate to advanced line dancers.  We quickly review and dance to old favorites and learn new line dances.  The genre is mostly country music.  Bring your friends and be ready to have fun!  Wear shows that will allow you to turn easily.  No cowboy boots.   Instructor: KCBootdancer

WERQ  Fit Class Pass Logo

Zumba®   Fit Class Pass Logo

Calling all gamers! Whether you're a noob or a pro, you can join leagues with friends and compete in your favorite games, including but not limited to Mario Kart, Rocket League, and Super Smash Brothers.  We'll crown one local esports champ and give away cool prizes!

Interested? Here are the details: 

  1. Download the free app and join Merriam Parks and Recreation to follow our esports program
  2. Register for open leagues in your favorite games, suggest new ones, and invite your friends!
  3. Chat and compete with league mates, view your schedule, and check standings each season
  4. Registration closes on Dec. 20.
  5. Leagues begin the first week of January, with four weeks of regular season game play before the playoffs.

  • Join an organization (Search for Merriam Parks and Rec)
  • Register for a league(s) in a game you own and play!
  • Invite your friends!

 Each week, you should…

  • Check the app for your next matchup (“View Matchup!”)
  • Chat with your league members (League Lobby) or your opponent (“View Matchup!”)
  • Reschedule your game if necessary (“Postpone”)

On game day…

  • Go online/meet up for your game at your scheduled time
  • Play your game on your console or PC
  • Afterwards, submit your score in the app (“Add Score”)
  • Start practicing for your next game!

Barbell Burn   Fit Class Pass Logo

This class takes barbell exercises traditionally done in teh weight room and switches them up using music.  This style of training focuses on endurance while working all major muscle groups to achieve lean muscle mass with cardiovascular benefits.  Great for all skill levels, from beginners to athletes.  Instructor: Brisendine

Morning Burn Bootcamp  Fit Class Pass Logo

Martial Arts

Aikido Yoshinkan- Traditional Martial Arts   

The Yoshinkan style of aikido is a dynamic system of throwing, joint-locking, striking, and pinning techniques. At its core, aikido is a self-defense martial art used by many law enforcement agencies across the world as an effective way to safely neutralize aggression. Classes are structured so beginning and advanced students alike will all have a fun and challenging experience. Instructors: Durán (2nd degree)

Simplified Tai Chi

Learn martial arts based on universal weapons, focusing on combat fighting using sticks, staffs, swords, etc. Students will also learn unarmed combat techniques. All weapons are padded, and protective gear is provided. Instructor: Miller

The Ki Society

You’re invited to have a new experience learning the five disciplines of the Ki Society (ki-breathing, ki-meditation, aikido, kiatsu, and bell meditation). These practices are fundamental to an awareness of our natural state of being. New students will receive 8 weeks of basic preparation during the first hour and are welcome to stay for the remainder of each class. Instructor: Montgomery (4th degree)

With more than 20 years of experience and a background in dance and correct postural alignment, Maryellen specializes in yoga and strength training.  She believes fitness should improve physical functioning while being fun and habit forming.

General Fitness Center Orientation

If you are new to the gym or interested in learning more about how to use the fitness equipment, we can help!  Ask any fitness attendant on duty how to safely and effectively use the strength and cardio machines.  FREE for members.


Fitness Evaluation

Receive a personal evaluation of your current fitness level.  The evaluation includes testing your cardiovascular health and strength, mobility, and flexibility levels.  You'll receive an explanation of your results and have the option to talk about creating a plan to help you reach your goals.  Dress in comfortable athletic clothing and wear closed-toe shoes.

Fitness Program Consultation

Work with a fitness consultant to help establish a program based on your goals.  During this one-hour visit, a fitness professional will help you identify your fitness goals, formulate a plan, and walk you through the program to ensure you're comfortable with the routine.  Contact our fitness coordinator to schedule your session.

This easy-to-learn, eye-hand coordination game is growing rapidly in popularity.  With all equipment provided, the only thing you need is a partner and a positive attitude! Aqua Flow - a taijifit experience:  Fit Class Pass Logo

Taijifit is a series of slow movements and stretches that flow into the next without pause staying in constant motion connecting mind, bocy and breath.  Nothing to learn, just follow along.  Water provides a gentle resistance and added balance.

Aqua Interval Fitness

Zorn Palette and Abstract Workshop

If you're an acrylic painter looking for a paint-mixing challenge or wanting to explore abstract art, then this workshop is for you! You'll stretch your painting talent through abstract exercises, both in sketches and painting, and will expand your color-mixing skills through the use of a limited set of primary colors.

A Zorn palette is four colors: black, red, yellow and white.  The callenge is mixing a pleasing array of colors to creae an abstract painting.  We'll also have fun using non-traditional tools for applying paint to your artwork.  Cost includes 12 hours of professional instruction and lunch both days.  Instructor: Kirkland
