The Merriam Parks and Recreation Department has something for everyone. Explore this section and enroll in one of our adult programs or classes. All classes are held at the Merriam Community Center, 6040 Slater Street, unless noted otherwise.

Dance Fitness

Bellydance 101

Bellydance 101 is a beginner-friendly, dance-inspired, mind-body workout.  Warm up with posture awareness exercises followed by core-building pilates.  Learn basic bellydance isolations while your seat, shimmy, and snake your way to a better mind and body connection.  Instructor: Cookson

Line Dancing for Beginners

Line dancing is a choreographed dance with a repeated step sequence. You’ll learn basic patterns and dances.  If you have always wanted to learn or have not line danced in a long time, this is the class for you.  Line dancing does not require a partner, so bring your friends and be ready to have fun!  Wear shoes that will allow you to turn easily.  No cowboy boots.  Instructor: KCBootdancer

Line Dance Mania (Intermediate to Advanced) 

This class if for intermediate to advanced line dancers.  We quickly review and dance to old favorites and learn new line dances.  The genre is mostly country music.  Bring your friends and be ready to have fun!  Wear shows that will allow you to turn easily.  No cowboy boots.   Instructor: KCBootdancer

WERQ (pronounced “work”) is the wildly addictive dance fitness class based on the hottest hip-hop music. Beyond being easy to follow for all levels, WERQ is an effective cardio class that feels more like a dance club experience. Instructor: TBD

Take the “work” out of workout by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin rhythms take over, you’ll see why Zumba fitness classes are often called “exercise in disguise.”  Instructor: Brisendine

Calling all gamers! Whether you're a noob or a pro, you can join leagues with friends and compete in your favorite games, including but not limited to Mario Kart, Rocket League, and Super Smash Brothers.  We'll crown one local esports champ and give away cool prizes!

Interested? Here are the details: 

  1. Download the free app and join Merriam Parks and Recreation to follow our esports program
  2. Register for open leagues in your favorite games, suggest new ones, and invite your friends!
  3. Chat and compete with league mates, view your schedule, and check standings each season
  4. Registration closes on August 29. 
  5. Leagues begin the first week of September.

  • Register for a league(s) in a game you own and play!

 Each week, you should…

  • Check the app for your next matchup (“View Matchup!”)
  • Chat with your league members (League Lobby) or your opponent (“View Matchup!”)
  • Reschedule your game if necessary (“Postpone”)

On game day…

  • Go online/meet up for your game at your scheduled time
  • Play your game on your console or PC
  • Afterwards, submit your score in the app (“Add Score”)
  • Start practicing for your next game!

Warrior Fit Cardio Kickboxing

Unleash the warrior within.  This class combines kickboxing, MMA, and cardio for an amazing workout.  Benefits include improved endurance and mass, and feeling powerful.  This is a bag-free workout; no gloves or previous experience necessary.  Instructor: Brisendine

Martial Arts

Aikido Yoshinkan- Traditional Martial Arts   

The Yoshinkan style of aikido is a dynamic system of throwing, joint-locking, striking, and pinning techniques. At its core, aikido is a self-defense martial art used by many law enforcement agencies across the world as an effective way to safely neutralize aggression. Classes are structured so beginning and advanced students alike will all have a fun and challenging experience. Instructors: Durán (2nd degree)

Simplified Tai Chi

Swordsmanship & Weapons

Learn martial arts based on universal weapons, focusing on combat fighting using sticks, staffs, swords, etc. Students will also learn unarmed combat techniques. All weapons are padded, and protective gear is provided. Instructor: Miller

The Ki Society

You’re invited to have a new experience learning the five disciplines of the Ki Society (ki-breathing, ki-meditation, aikido, kiatsu, and bell meditation). These practices are fundamental to an awareness of our natural state of being. New students will receive 8 weeks of basic preparation during the first hour and are welcome to stay for the remainder of each class. Instructor: Montgomery (4th degree)

If you are new to the gym or interested in learning more about how to use the fitness equipment, we can help!  Ask any fitness attendant on duty how to safely and effectively use the strength and cardio machines.  FREE for members.


Fitness Evaluation

Receive a personal evaluation of your current fitness level.  The evaluation includes testing your cardiovascular health and strength, mobility, and flexibility levels.  You'll receive an explanation of your results and have the option to talk about creating a plan to help you reach your goals.  Dress in comfortable athletic clothing and wear closed-toe shoes.

Fitness Program Consultation

Work with a fitness consultant to help establish a program based on your goals.  During this one-hour visit, a fitness professional will help you identify your fitness goals, formulate a plan, and walk you through the program to ensure you're comfortable with the routine.  Contact our fitness coordinator to schedule your session.

Part tennis, part badminton, part pingpong, all fun! This easy-to-learn, eye-hand coordination game is growing rapidly in popularity.  With all equipment provided, the only thing you need is a partner and a positive attitude! Beginner Pickleball

Aqua Interval Fitness 

This class combines cardio and strength training intervals using noodles and dumbbells at varying intensities. Increase stamina, strength, flexibility, and joint range of motion. Murder Mystery Night

Enjoy adult beverages and a show!  This interactive murder mystery night shouldn't be missed! Villainy meets variety when a murder interrupts a vaudeville show in La Cynge, Kansas in 1923.  Loosely based on a true story, this show puts you in the middle of the roaring 1920s in a small town shaken by the murder of a prominent citizen.  Feel free to dress in your favorite 20s garb to really get into the theme!  Instructor: KC Mystery Players
