The City of Merriam will switch from the 2012 to the 2018 Building and Fire Codes beginning Jan. 1, 2021. City Councilmembers adopted the updated codes last month.

Contractors with a Merriam occupation license will soon receive a postcard in the mail with more information.

Bryan Dyer, Merriam’s Community Development director, said the City is now in alignment with other Johnson County organizations, including the City of Overland Park. The Overland Park Fire Department provides fire services for the City of Merriam.

“Staff from both cities worked closely in drafting the new building and fire codes, strengthening our building safety partnership,” Dyer said. “The new codes will provide updated standards for building safety, convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency.”
