Police Chief Highlights 2020 in Annual Report

Merriam Police Chief Darren McLaughlin shared his 2020 Annual Report to City Councilmembers on March 8. Chief McLaughlin highlighted several community connections in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, including: 

  • Officers participated in more than 100 birthday parades to celebrate kids who couldn’t have birthday parties.
  • The department hosted a 10-week Citizens Police Academy.
  • Officers raised more than $15,500 for Special Olympics.
  • Det. Jared Ruby was named the 2020 Officer of the Year by his peers.
  • Three officers received Life Saving Awards.

Noted statistics included:

  • Car crashes were down nearly 30% from 2019.
  • 28% of those crashes were on Shawnee Mission Parkway.
  • Officers made 230 DUI arrests.
