Appointments to Merriam's Boards and Commissions are recommended by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Residents appointed to these boards receive no monetary compensation, and their services and interest in the development of our city is a valuable contribution to the continued progress of Merriam. The Merriam Park and Recreation Advisory Board is an appointed body that provides recommendations for operations and program priorities concerning the Merriam Parks and Recreation facilities.
The Planning Commission's duties include holding public hearings to consider applications to rezone property; proposed amendments to the city's zoning ordinance; and annually reviewing the Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Map of the City.
The Board of Structure Appeals is an appointed body having jurisdiction to hear and decide appeals in a decision made by a public officer in the enforcement of the Uniform Building Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, or any other ordinance adopted by the city relating to the construction for buildings.
A hearing before the Board of Zoning Appeals is scheduled when an application is filed for a variance of zoning regulations, approval of a conditional use, or an appeal of a decision rendered by the zoning administrator.
