Watch for a transformative $102 million mixed-use development north of Shawnee Mission Parkway between Ikea Way and Antioch Road.
Merriam City Councilmembers unanimously approved all 13 votes to redevelop this area at a Special City Council meeting on June 16.
“With the Merriam City Council’s leadership, we were able to secure the future of this area – now named Grand Station Marketplace,” City Administrator Chris Engel said. “We’re excited to see new development in this area, which includes apartments, restaurants, and a grocery store – something our residents have said they wanted in our city for quite some time.”
The votes included approving a redevelopment agreement with Drake Development, creating a Community Improvement District at Merriam Grand Station and Grand Station Marketplace, and approving bond ordinances to issue general obligation bonds.
“With Merriam’s recent ‘AAA’ bond rating, we’ll be able to save our residents thousands of dollars when we issue bonds to help fund this development,” Engel said.
Before the City Council voted, there were two public hearings about the redevelopment project plan and establishing a CID.
“Staff appreciates the City Council’s guidance in moving this project forward. Grand Station Marketplace, alongside the adjacent Merriam Grand Station, will help create a vibrant community hub for our residents, neighbors, and future generations,” Engel said. “We look forward to sharing more as this redevelopment progresses.”
