Downtown Merriam has long been a place of small-town character, homegrown businesses, and local pride. But for years, development in this area has been limited by significant floodplain constraints and aging infrastructure. Now, we're looking toward the future—with your help.

In November, Merriam City Council approved the creation of a Downtown Master Plan, launching a formal planning process to define a clear vision and realistic path forward. This effort will build on years of community input and recent planning work to create a clear, actionable path forward. The plan will address land use, business development, infrastructure, public space, streetscape, and more, with a strong focus on implementation and community-driven priorities.

What's Happening Now
The City released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking a consultant team to help guide this process. Proposals are due January 9, and we expect to select a consultant team in early 2026.

Once selected, the planning team will work closely with City staff, stakeholders, and the public to shape a vision that reflects our community values, goals, and opportunities.

Why This Matters
Much of downtown Merriam sits in a federally designated floodplain, making private reinvestment difficult. Through this process, we’ll evaluate how to unlock the area’s potential, reduce risk, and lay the groundwork for a downtown that serves the next generation—whether through adaptive reuse, redevelopment, improved mobility, or enhanced amenities.

Stay Involved
Community engagement will be central to the success of this plan. Opportunities for input will be announced throughout the process, including public meetings, surveys, and open houses. Find all the ways you can Stay Connected.
