Edelweiss Neighborhood Celebrates 50 Years

Published on May 22, 2025

Edelweiss historian Pat Meads, Mayor Bob Pape, and City Councilmembers Christine Evans Hands and Bruce Kahdahl pose at the celebration.

The Edelweiss neighborhood recently celebrated its 50th anniversary!

Edelweiss was recorded in the Johnson County register of deeds in November 1974, with the first residents moving in in 1975.

Nearly 80 residents got together on May 18 to reminisce. They looked at decades’ worth of old neighborhood newsletters, a price list from what things cost in 1975, and popular toys, TV shows, and movies.

Merriam City Councilmembers Christine Evans Hands and Bruce Kaldahl live in the Edelweiss neighborhood and were at the celebration as Mayor Bob Pape issued a proclamation that read, in part:

“The Edelweiss Community impresses with the number of residential volunteers who took a lot of time and effort to maintain the Edelweiss neighborhood… and the community has always been very involved in various capacities in the City of Merriam, including being home to several members of the governing body, committee members, and events, and we know the Edelweiss Community will continue maintaining a high quality of life and involvement in the City of Merriam.”
