Extended Alcohol Sales Approved for 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Merriam City Council voted 8-0 on Monday to allow extended alcohol and cereal malt beverage (CMB) sales during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following new authority granted under Kansas House Bill 2481.

The temporary measure permits alcohol sales and consumption for 23 consecutive hours each day—from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.—between June 11 and July 19, 2026. The provision expires automatically on July 20.

The approval means all eligible Merriam businesses may extend their hours if they choose.

House Bill 2481 allows cities statewide to opt in to the expanded hours during the international soccer tournament. City staff will now notify Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control and provide the resolution to all affected businesses.
