On April 28, the Merriam City Council voted to pass an ordinance establishing an organized collection service for residential trash, recycling, and yard waste with GFL Environmental Inc.

GFL was the lowest bidder of five bids received and will now become the City’s single trash hauler.

In the contract, residents would pay about $23 per month, which includes a small administrative fee. Prices will increase by 3% yearly over the 5-year agreement. Residents will see this charge on their biannual property tax bill.

The contract also includes:

  • Weekly trash, recycling, and yard waste (all picked up on the same day)
  • 65- and 95-gallon bins
  • Yard waste up to 10 bags, with two amnesty weeks
  • Up to three bulk items each month
  • Garage to curb service for those who qualify

The City Council still needs to vote on the final contract with GFL.

Per state statute, there is an 18-month window for residents to allow their current provider contracts to expire before the City's contract takes effect. The earliest the City’s contract would begin is Nov. 1, 2026.
