After years of residents asking for a grocery store closer to home, the wait is almost over. Trader Joe's will officially open its new Merriam location on Wednesday, September 2 at 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway.
The new store will anchor Merriam Grand Station Marketplace, a major mixed-use redevelopment along Shawnee Mission Parkway.
For eight years, Merriam residents have consistently asked for a grocery store as one of the businesses they most wanted to see in the community. City leaders say the opening of Trader Joe’s answers that call directly. The arrival of Trader Joe's fills that long-standing gap while bringing one of the country’s most recognizable neighborhood grocery brands to Merriam.
"This is an exciting time for Merriam," said Mayor Bob Pape. "Bringing a grocery store back into our city has been a priority for years, and having a retailer as beloved as Trader Joe's choose Merriam speaks to the momentum our community is building."

About the Merriam Grand Station Marketplace Trader Joe's serves as the anchor tenant of the Merriam Grand Station Marketplace, a $102 million mixed-use redevelopment on the north side of Shawnee Mission Parkway. The project will includes additional restaurants and residential units to the area in the coming years.
