Each year in early May, communities across the country recognize National Small Business Week, a time to celebrate the entrepreneurs, family-owned shops, and independent service providers that are the backbone of our local economies. Established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and organized by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), this weeklong celebration honors the resilience, innovation, and economic contributions of America’s small business owners.

Here in Merriam, small businesses are more than just storefronts—they are our neighbors, our friends, and impactful contributors to the city’s ongoing growth and success. From restaurants and boutiques to repair shops and creative startups, Merriam’s small business community fuels jobs, strengthens local culture, and keeps our city moving in a positive direction.

  • In Merriam, small businesses add unique charm and diversity to our commercial ecosystem. Whether it's grabbing a sweet treat at Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, placing an order for a custom print project at Creative Printing, or shopping for a new-to-you treasure at Slater St. Antiques, supporting small businesses is important to their continued success.

Merriam Small Business Support

We recognize the essential role small businesses play in building a strong and sustainable economy. The city actively supports local businesses through:

  • Outreach and appreciation events

  • Economic development resources and guidance

  • Community programs like “Shop Merriam” and seasonal promotions

During Small Business Week, we take this support a step further by highlighting local success stories, sharing tips from Merriam entrepreneurs, and encouraging residents and visitors to explore and support our city’s small businesses.

Throughout the week, we'll share our efforts on our social channels. Follow along and help us shine a spotlight on the incredible small businesses that make Merriam Just Right!
