On Saturday, Representative Sharice Davids will join local officials to tour Upper Turkey Creek in Merriam, Kansas. This week, the U.S. House is voting on a bill that would fulfill Davids’ federal funding request for the Upper Turkey Creek levee project, kickstarting the design and eventually leading to the removal of Downtown Merriam from the FEMA-designated floodplain.
If passed by both the House and Senate, funding for this project would impact hundreds of homes and over 80 businesses in Merriam. It has been a longtime priority for the community and a significant barrier to economic development and safety in the area. Speakers will share how Davids’ request could finally help overcome that barrier and how it would affect the local community.
