The Merriam Police Department is now accepting online applications for the Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens Police Academy started in 2009 as a way to strengthen relationships with the community. Get a behind-the-scene tour of what officers do on a daily basis. 

The free 10-week program is held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. at the Merriam Police Department, located at 9010 W. 62nd St. 

Participants learn about:

  • Court procedure
  • Traffic enforcement and accident investigation
  • Use of force and defensive tactics, including a taser demonstration
  • Domestic violence
  • Firearms training
  • DUI investigation
  • Many other law enforcement topics
  • Drone demonstrations
  • Mental Health Co-Responder
  • Criminal investigations
  • Video simulator

Participants will also tour the Merriam police station as well as Johnson County crime lab, dispatch, and jail.

Persons interested in attending the Merriam Police Department Citizens Academy must be at least 18 years old, without any drug, domestic violence, or felony convictions or adjudications. Applicants must pass a records and background check and provide a personal reference. Non-Merriam residents are welcome to apply.
