Citizens Police Academy

Officers are showing several academy members how to safely use a gun at on outdoor gun range.

Wednesdays, 6–9 p.m.

The Merriam Police Department is now accepting online applications for the Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens Police Academy started in 2009 as a way to strengthen relationships with the community. Get a behind-the-scene tour of what officers do on a daily basis. The 10-week program starts Wednesday, Aug. 23 and runs through Oct. 25. Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m at the Merriam Police Department located at 9010 W. 62nd St. 

Non-Merriam residents are welcome to apply.  

Participants learn about:

  • Court procedure
  • Traffic enforcement and accident investigation
  • Use of force and defensive tactics, including a taser demonstration
  • Domestic violence
  • Firearms training
  • DUI investigation
  • Many other law enforcement topics
  • K9/drone demonstrations
  • Mental Health Co-Responder
  • Criminal investigations
  • Video simulator

Participants will also tour the Merriam police station as well as Johnson County crime lab, dispatch, and jail.
