Lock Up Your Cars and Homes – Break-Ins Are Happening

Published on January 12, 2024

A Merriam police vehicle is on a snowy street with its break lights on that is illuminating on the snow.

The cold, snowy weather isn’t stopping burglars from trying to break into your home, car, or garage. Merriam police officers have seen an uptick in break-ins this week.

Maj. Chris Brokaw wants to make sure you stay safe. He said lock your vehicles, even when parked in front of your home.

“Don’t leave any valuables in plain view, and if you have a garage door opener, take it inside with you or hide it well in your vehicle,” Brokaw said

He said that’s because thieves often break into cars looking for garage openers so they can enter a home at a later date.

If you see anything unusual in your neighborhood, call the Merriam Police Department at 913-322-5560 during business hours or dispatch at 913-782-0720 after hours.
