Community Special Events

Community events is a great way to meet new people, provide one-time or project-orientated support be creative and help fulfill the City of Merriam Parks and Recreation Department mission to to enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors. You will also find that volunteering sometimes includes a hidden bonus or two!

Boards and Commissions

Appointments to Merriam's Boards and Commissions are recommended by the mayor and confirmed by the council. Citizens appointed to these boards receive no monetary compensation and their services and interest in the development of our city is a valuable contribution to the continued progress of Merriam.

Park Clean Ups

Maintaining a park takes a team and is an ongoing task.  Spend an hour or a an afternoon beautifying a city park.  This is a perfect volunteer opportunity for the entire family teaching the value of giving back to the community.  

Tasks include picking up trash and debris that has collected in landscape beds, along fence rows, in waterways / ditches.

The Parks and Recreation Department will provide safety vests and trash bags - you provide the labor.

Recycle Events

Participating in these events is a great way to get involved and make a difference in keeping items out of landfills and help the environment!  

  • Recycling Event  (1st weekend in May; 8 - 11am)
    • Recycling event assistants help collect and load paint onto pallets and help direct traffic to various other stations as part of the event.

       

  • Paint Sorting Event (the week after recycling event in May;  8 a.m. -12 p.m. & 12:30-4 p.m. time slots accommodate up to 6 people)
    • Help process latex paint collected.

 

Closed toe shoes and clothing that may get messy are required.  Must be 18+ years of age able to lift 5 gallons of paint and be on your feet for both positions.
