This position is responsible to support the City of Merriam’s mission by providing a variety of routine to advanced administrative work for the Community Development Department. This position actively interacts with members of the public and has a strong sense of customer service and discipline.

Essential Functions

  • Responds to public inquiries relating to Community Development services; handles questions and matters of a more technical nature; responds professionally to citizen concerns.
  • Coordinates the office operations of the department using various computer software applications to design databases and form for department-related files and information.
  • Prepares accurate agendas and supporting materials; takes and transcribes minutes; prepares and distributes various minutes and reports.
  • Maintains accurate departmental records and documents.
  • Schedules building and environmental inspections.
  • Issues various licenses and permits as assigned.
  • Electronic transactions processing and bank deposit reconciliation and preparation.
  • May serve as a back-up for City Hall Administrative Coordinator and City Clerk.
  • Attends various evening meetings as the recording secretary.
  • May serve as a member of various employee committees
  • Promote City values at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate on a one-to-one basis with the public
  • Excellent public service skills
  • Ability to interact with members of the public via telephone, electronic means, and in-person
  • Some knowledge of building permits and planning processes preferred, but not mandatory
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite with competence in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to use modern office equipment
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and interruptions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, employees, and elected officials

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in an office management or administrative setting
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
