Improve the energy efficiency of your home!

Merriam residents and property owners can install energy-saving systems, including energy-efficient windows and doors, insulation, solar power, wind power, high-efficiency HVAC, and geothermal heating and cooling.

We're no longer accepting applications in 2023. Check back in 2024.

Step 1.Understand the requirements

  • The program will provide a 30 percent reimbursement for energy saving improvements upon completion.
  • Minimum $2,000 investment by property owner.
  • Reimbursement amount-minimum $600; maximum $3,000.
  • All Merriam residents, who don't live in an apartment, may apply.
  • Eligible improvements include, but are not limited to: Home Energy Audit (blower door audit) by certified auditor, solar power, wind power, energy efficient HVAC and/or water heather, energy efficient windows and/or doors, insulation, geothermal heating and cooling, duct sealing.
  • Energy saving improvements must meet the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)-specifications are provided on a separate sheet.
  • Contractors(s) utilized to perform the improvements must have a Merriam Occupational license, and is appropriate, a Johnson County Contractors License. 
  • Work bids, including all project specification sheets, must be submitted prior to application approval. 
  • Once the City approves your project, work must begin within 120 days. 
  • Grant money will be available until all $65,000 has been allocated.
  • After all funding has been allocated, a waiting list will be created for qualifying applications.

  • Homeowner: Must be current on all property taxes.
  • Provide proof of property insurance.

Step 3.Submit your application

Applicant must submit bids before application is approved. Application must be approved before construction can start. Work must be completed by September 15. City staff will perform a post-project inspection to verify work has been completed and code compliant.

Step 5.If approved, wait for reimbursement

  • The City will reimburse applicants after receiving at least $2,000 in receipts. 
  • Staff performs a post project inspection to verify project completion.
  • No exterior code violations are present.
  • Recipient must complete a W-9 Form(PDF, 142KB)

You can submit your application after 8 a.m. the morning of Jan. 3. Please bring your completed application to the Community Development Department at Merriam City Hall.
